Apply for a mini orchard for your school

Apply for a mini orchard to plant in your school grounds and to support the Queen’s Green Canopy initiative.

Bristol City Council and Goram Homes are working together to support the Queen’s Green Canopy initiative to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022.

We’re inviting schools across Bristol to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee" by offering 70 free mini orchards to schools across the city.

We'll prioritise applications that are:

  • in an area of low tree canopy
  • in disadvantaged areas

Each mini orchard includes:

  • three fruit trees
  • a planting pack
  • planting support and advice from our One Tree Per Child team.

You will get your mini orchard in January 2022, ready for planting.

The closing date for the offer is 3 December 2021.

Benefits of a mini orchard

You can use your mini orchard to teach about the environment and for lesson plans. Fruit trees absorb carbon, help screen out noise and pollution and provide a home for wildlife. In autumn, you’ll have a harvest of fresh and healthy fruit for the classroom.

To apply, you will need:

  • to have space for 3 fruit trees in your school grounds - to be planted together, but at least 4 metres apart, or you can supply your own 50 litre pots for each tree.
  • to be responsible for the maintenance of the trees including weeding and watering.
  • to plant the trees in your school grounds. (One Tree Per Child staff will be available to give you help and advice.)
  • to pin your planted trees on the Queen’s Green Canopy map, to mark the occasion.
