How restoration work has improved the lake area.

What the improvements are

We recently carried out restoration work on the Victorian lake in St George Park.

We've invested £400,000 to improve the:

  • facilities on and around the lake for local residents and visitors
  • natural environment for birds and other wildlife

We've:

  • repaired footpaths around the lake
  • replaced and strengthen the lake's walls
  • added a new boardwalk dipping platform, so that children can watch wildlife and take samples from the lake to learn about nature and conservation

We've used silt from the lake and planted wetland plant species to make new wetland areas and habitats for:

  • wildfowl
  • amphibious creatures, such as frogs and newts
  • insects

We've also made a natural amphitheatre on the side of the lake for outdoor performances.
