Extra support available for south Bristol businesses

The South Bristol Talent Pathway Project (SBTaPP) aims to help local businesses grow, as well as supporting young people into employment.

Launched on 11 May at Bristol Community Links South, this new Bristol City Council led initiative was established earlier this year to help support small and medium sized businesses in south Bristol.

SBTaPP, which sits under the wider West of England Workforce for the Future Programme, is open to Small or Medium sized Enterprise (SME) with less than 250 employees based in South Bristol wards. The scheme provides support to businesses to identify where they can make improvements, for example recruitment, apprenticeships, training packages and work experience opportunities, that will help bring students from some of the most deprived areas in the region into employment.

Councillor Asher Craig, Deputy Mayor with responsibility for Children’s Services, Education and Equalities said, “We are currently working with over 25 businesses as part of SBTaPP, looking to understand how they can meet their current and future needs, but we would like even more to get involved. We are looking to upskill and train existing employees or offer career opportunities to people through Bristol Works, which builds local partnerships and connections that reflect the different communities we serve.”

“SBTaPP has really improved what we can offer to south Bristol schools. We want young people to be inspired career-wise through the opportunities on offer and it is important that we do this through local businesses and people.”

The SBTaPP focuses specifically on where the businesses are located as opposed to the sector they are in. It is this community-based engagement that sets SBTaPP apart from other similar projects in the region. 
SBTaPP covers a wide range of sectors, including hospitality, retail and construction with 26 businesses having signed up to the project so far. The overall aim is to get over a hundred businesses involved, before the project completes in March next year.

Alison Hurley, Director of Education and Skills, spoke at the event and said she believes the project will help the area to build back after the significant impact of the last two years.

She said, "Across south Bristol’s most deprived areas, it is vitally important to help the local economy and its community recover after the pandemic. To help do this we are working with local businesses to make sure they receive the support they need to develop their workforce and offer the right skills and training options. This will enable small to medium sized enterprises to increase their productivity and offer wide-ranging employment opportunities for the local community through colleges, schools and apprenticeship programmes."

Steve Clymer, owner of The Steam Crane in Bedminster has been involved in the project for five months and is keen to see his business grow whilst also offering local people a chance to develop their careers within the hospitality industry. He said “Working with the South Bristol Talent Pathway Project has been a really positive experience. With their support we are developing new ways to build the business and I’m delighted that we have been able to get three members of our staff onto an apprenticeship programme.”
