Operational note: Emergency repairs to Prince Street Bridge

Operational note: Emergency repairs to Prince Street Bridge

We will be carrying out emergency repairs to Prince Street Bridge this week after the mechanism to open the swing bridge failed.

26 April 2022

The bridge will be closed to motor vehicles from 8am on 27 April to 4pm on 28 April.

To minimise disruption to commuters, the bridge will only be closed to pedestrians and cyclists between 10am and 4pm on Wednesday 27 and Thursday 28 April, with crossings possible outside these times.

While Prince Street Bridge is closed, signs will divert everyone to Redcliffe Bridge where they can continue their journey.

A notice has been sent to mariners to make them aware of the upcoming temporary closure of the bridge.

A spokesperson for Bristol City Council said: “We urgently need to repair a mechanism that allows Prince Street Bridge to swing open. It shouldn’t take us long to fix, but we were unable to give more notice because the problem has only just been identified. We will work to repair the bridge as quickly as possible and would like to thank everyone for bearing with us.”

Prince Street Bridge is a Grade II listed iron swing bridge across Bristol Harbour. It carries a road from Prince Street to Wapping Road and was built in 1879.
