Operational Note: Planned closure of Muller Road

Bristol City Council has applied to close a section of Muller Road next week to remove a group of vehicle dwellers who are unlawfully occupying land that is due to be developed for social housing.

19 August 2021

The section to be closed runs in both directions between Brent Road and Ralph Road, including the closure of the junction of Draycott Road, Springfield Avenue and Queen’s Road.

If the vehicle dwellers do not move on of their own accord, the road closure will take place at 6am on Wednesday 25 August 2021. The road will be reopened as soon as possible, but it may remain closed all day.

A council spokesperson said: “The council has worked with the vehicle dwellers to establish any welfare needs, and to find suitable alternative accommodation, offering them alternative pitches at other sites.

“Legal action is always a last resort, but we were due to start building 32 council homes on the site in June, which will become available for a social rent for families on our waiting list. This has already been delayed due to the occupation of the land. Building affordable housing for Bristol is one of our top priorities, and we do not want any further delays with this development to make homes being available for Bristol families.

“We acknowledge that this road closure is likely to have a major impact on local traffic, and may cause local people some inconvenience, but would like to reassure you that we will do all that we can to have the road reopened as soon as possible.

“We appreciate that people living in vehicles do so for a variety of reasons and our focus is on finding solutions that are sustainable.”
