COVID-19 and project extensions
The Innovation Programme was due to end in March 2022. We've extended the end date until August 2022, so projects to be delivered by June 2022.
The deadline for the second round of open innovation funding closed 30 June 2021.
What funding is available
We’re offering funding to help pay for ideas for libraries that will benefit local people.
It’s called the Innovation Fund. It’s available for projects or activities that can be completed by June 2022.
Funding for libraries Friends Groups
The deadline for Friends Groups applications will now run monthly until 30 June 2022.
Libraries Friends Groups can apply for up to £1000 to help:
- set up and run the group
- pay for ideas for improving the library service
To be eligible for the funding your Friends Group must:
- follow our pdf Guidance Framework (205 KB)
- have a group bank account
- have a written constitution
Application deadlines for Friends Groups
You need to apply by 5pm on the last day of each month until 30 June 2022.
We’ll tell you if your application is successful within 2 weeks.

After you apply
We'll assess your application based on how well it:
- empowers and cares for people
- is fair and inclusive
- helps connect people in communities
- supports and enables wellbeing
If your application is successful, you'll need to present your project or activity at a meeting with people from the libraries Friends Groups and other community representatives in August 2022.
Funding for organisations
The Library Innovation Fund was launched in October 2019, offering just over £100,000 to be split between the city’s 27 libraries.
Up to £3,000 was made available for each library. View a pdf list of the projects awarded funding in January 2020 (139 KB) .
There was a second round of funding from innovation funds that weren't allocated in January 2020. The deadline for applications was 30 June 2021. The panel board awarded funding to four projects from Junction 3, Redland, Westbury and Wick Road libraries. See a document list of the projects awarded funding in August 2021 (14 KB) .
We'll allocate the remaining funding for each library after we talk to the Friends Group, community groups and ward councillors. We'll spend the funding by August 2022.
