 Apply for an exemption if you work in the Bristol Clean Air Zone, have a low income and your vehicle doesn't meet the zone's emission standards. Eligible vehicles are cars or vans weighing less than 3.5 tonnes that are not taxis or private hire vehicles.

Check whether your vehicle is nationally exempt or will be charged on the online vehicle checker (GOV.UK).

You can apply for a low income worker exemption for one vehicle if you:

  • live outside the Clean Air Zone

  • work more than 18 hours per week at a business premises located within the zone

  • earn less than £26,000 a year before deductions

  • earn no more than £13.51 per hour

You must meet all 4 criteria to apply.

Apply for a Low Income Worker Exemption

You'll be notified of the outcome of your application within 15 working days.  You're not exempt from the Clean Air Zone charge until your application is approved, so allow enough time for your application to be processed.

All exemptions are free of charge.

The Clean Air Zone is managed by cameras with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR). If your exemption application is approved, the ANPR system will recognise your vehicle automatically and you don't need to display anything in your vehicle.

This exemption will end on 31 March 2023.
