Apply for an exemption if you live within the Clean Air Zone.

You can apply for an exemption if you live within the Clean Air Zone and your vehicle doesn't meet the zone's emission standards.

Check whether your vehicle is nationally exempt or will be charged on the online vehicle checker (GOV.UK).

You can apply for a resident exemption if your vehicle is a:

  • car with no more than 8 seats in addition to the driver's seat, and is not a taxi or private hire vehicle

or

  • van weighing less than 3.5 tons that is not registered to a company or a sole trader

The vehicle must be registered to the applicant's address. You can apply for more than one vehicle, but you'll need to apply for each one separately.

Apply for Resident Exemption

You'll be notified of the outcome of your application within 15 working days.  You're not exempt from the Clean Air Zone charge until your application is approved, so allow enough time for your application to be processed.

All exemptions are free of charge.

The Clean Air Zone is managed by cameras with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR). If your exemption application is approved, the ANPR system will recognise your vehicle automatically and you don't need to display anything in your vehicle.

This exemption will end on 31 March 2023.
