Ask us to install a road sign

What we use road signs for, ask us to install a road sign, and find out what other requests we’ve had to install them.

There are different types of road signs, including:

  • signs giving orders, such as 20mph zone signs or stop signs
  • warning signs, such as roundabout signs or two-way traffic signs
  • information signs, such as controlled parking zone signs or traffic priority signs
  • direction signs, such as blue signs on motorways or brown tourist signs

You can find more information on the different types of road sign on GOV.UK.

Direction signs

We get many requests for direction signs to places in Bristol, mainly from businesses and local organisations. Too many signs of this kind can be confusing for drivers.

For this reason, we only allow a small number of signs. We consider:

  • how many people visit the establishment
  • what the best way to direct traffic is

Contact Destination Bristol to request a brown tourist sign.

Ask us to install a road sign

To ask for a road sign, use the ask for a change to a road form.

You can also check if someone else has asked for one in the same spot.

What happens next

We’ll record your request and consider it when we decide which requests to go ahead with. This will depend on different things, including:

  • whether we think the area needs it
  • the cost
  • how it might affect traffic in the area

If we agree to your request, there will be a consultation and public advertisement before we can go ahead with the installation.

The public advertisement involves posting:

  • notices on site telling people of the suggested change
  • an advert in the local press inviting comments or objections

The consultation and public advertisement can take six months or longer.
