Mental health and wellbeing badge

Mental health and wellbeing badge

What is the Mental Health and Wellbeing Badge, what your school needs to do to achieve it and how to apply.

About the Mental Health and Wellbeing Badge

We designed the Mental Health and Wellbeing Badge to adopt a whole school approach to improving mental health and wellbeing. It’s based on best practice guidance from Public Health England and the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE).

Working towards the badge will help your school to:

  • improve the mental health and wellbeing of all pupils and staff
  • make sure there are appropriate strategies in place to support pupils most at risk

What your school needs to do to achieve the badge

To earn the Mental Health and Wellbeing badge, your schools needs to:

  • register interest in doing the badge with the Healthy Schools team
  • create a Health and Wellbeing group, which should include memebers of the senior leadership team, governors, parents, staff, and pupils, to lead and promote the work
  • include your Healthy Schools commitment to improving mental health and wellbeing in the School Health Improvement Plan and related school documents
  • RAG rate your school using the Mental Health Badge audit
  • work to achieve a set of best practice standards around mental health and wellbeing, with support from the Healthy Schools team
  • submit your completed Mental Health Badge audit to the Healthy Schools team

We’re here to support you throughout the process.

Advanced Mental Health and Wellbeing badge

If you decide to do the Advanced Mental Health and Wellbeing badge, the Healthy Schools team will work with you to:

  • focus on a specific mental health and wellbeing issue for your school
  • design a behaviour change plan

How long it takes

The timescale for achieving the Mental Health and Wellbeing Badge, including the Advanced Level, is 6 to 18 months.

Activities related to your plan should run for at least six months.

How we evaluate your work

A member of the Healthy Schools team will go through your evidence against the badge criteria.

If we find any gaps or evidence you can improve, we’ll give you feedback to help you improve. You’ll have the opportunity to re-submit your work.

For the Advanced badge, we’ll assess your submission against the general guidance, and also look at whether your intervention worked.

How we reward your work

When your school achieves the Mental Health and Wellbeing Badge, we’ll send you a certificate, as well as the relevant logos, which you can add onto your website and letterheads.

We’ll also feature you on our website, so your local community and other schools can learn about the work your pupils and staff did to earn the badge.

How we support your school

We’ll give you a Bristol Healthy Schools lead, who’ll support you through the awards process.

We support all schools but give more time and focus to schools in deprived areas, Pupil Referral Units and Special Schools.
