Accessing council and social housing
Help us improve the way we let our homes
We’re currently reviewing the way we let council and social housing across the city. We want the process to be easier to understand and use, helping us to house those in greatest need and giving realistic expectations to people who join the housing register.
The review will give us the opportunity to look at who is housed and why, and to develop options for how to let social housing in the future.
We need to continue to comply with legal requirements and regulations while at the same time trying to meet the needs of as many people as possible.
In 2019-2020 we ran a survey and held four community events before the review was put on hold because of the COVID-19 pandemic. We’ve also gathered extensive research into how the challenges are being addressed elsewhere across the country.
What happens next
Over the coming weeks and months, we now need to consider the different ways we can do things and make a number of challenging choices.
To help us work through the possibilities we ran a number of consultations with special interest groups. We have also set up a Residents’ Working Group that is made up of a group of residents who broadly represent those on the housing register.
Once we have established our draft proposals, we will run a public consultation to get feedback from as many people as possible.
Watch this space and like our Facebook page to keep up to date with what’s happening and look out for information about when the public consultation will take place.
