Supporting children and students with a vision impairment in specialist settings (online course)

This is an opportunity for your school or setting to: 

  • develop understanding 
  • make sure your staff have knowledge and skills needed to meet the needs of this low incidence group of students

This course gives access to online materials with activities that relate to and support practice in schools. Throughout this course there’s access to an experienced Qualified Teacher of the Visually Impaired (QTVI) or a Qualified Teacher for Multi-Sensory Impaired (MSI) who will support participants’ professional development.

Who the course is for

The course is for any Teaching Assistant (TA), Learning Support Assistant (LSA) or education professional who is working with or has an interest in working with pupils with vision impairment. 

The activities throughout the course aim to relate directly to the role of working with a pupil with a vision impairment. Access to a pupil with vision impairment is useful to be able to fully participate in the course.

What the course covers

The online course consists of 9 modules. 

The materials are designed to actively involve the participant in their learning, to: 

  • consider best practice 
  • relate this directly to their current work

Topics include: 

  • access to the curriculum
  • enhancing the learning environment
  • promoting visual skills
  • cerebral visual impairment and tactile learning
