Nannies and home carers

Nannies and home carers

Nannies and home carers provide childcare in the children’s home and can look after children of any age.

They’re not required to hold a childcare qualification, but many do. They can also join the voluntary Ofsted childcare register.

One of the most common ways to find a home-based child-carer is through a recruitment agency. They will usually check that the person has:

  • an awareness of the core skills of childcare
  • a current Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS, formerly CRB) check
  • a first aid qualification
  • public liability insurance

Before employing a nanny, you should make sure that these checks have been done.

A list of nannies and nanny agencies is available on the Bristol FIS Childcare Search.
