Character assessments are created to help us understand what make areas of Bristol that don't have conservation status special.
Bristol’s character is defined by its distinct neighbourhoods and conservation areas. These are areas with a special character informed by their topography, landscape, views, layout, architectural style, materials, land use and social development.
We create character appraisals and assessments to help explain how the character of a neighbourhood or conservation area is formed by looking at its origins and highlighting the key features that define the area as it exists today.
Understanding the different areas of Bristol helps us to make informed decisions on what changes can be made to them in the future. This encourages positive development that builds on and enhances Bristol’s historic legacy and unique sense of place.
