Education outside mainstream schools

Find out about home educating and what teaching is available for seriously ill children and those with challenging behaviour.

By law all children have to receive a full time education, but it doesn’t have to be in school.

  • Home education

You can choose to educate your child at home if you’re willing to take on full responsibility for their education.

  • Education for ill children

The Hospital Education Service offers teaching to children who miss school for long periods because they’re in hospital or too ill to attend school.

  • Alternative Learning Provision

The Alternative Learning Provision (formerly the Pupil Referral Service) is for pupils who can't attend mainstream educational settings.
