Improving Denmark Street area consultation 2025

Archived
We asked about proposals to improve the public space and road safety on Denmark Street, Denmark Avenue, Frogmore Street and Trenchard Street in central Bristol.

We asked

Between 22 August 2025 and 9 October 2025, we asked for views on proposals to manage traffic and improve the public space around Denmark Street, Denmark Avenue, Frogmore Street and Trenchard Street.

An online consultation survey was available to respondents. Alternative formats such as Easy Read, braille, large print, printed surveys, and translation to other languages were available on request.

A total of 688 responses were received. The consultation report summarises the results.

We did

Following feedback from the consultation, proposals were refined to better reflect the views of the local community. Changes included:

  • Not progressing with proposals to close Denmark Avenue to motor vehicles
  • Marking out dedicated e‑scooter and e‑bike parking behind The Hatchet Inn
  • Reviewing street lighting and CCTV in the area to address safety concerns

The proposals were approved on 5 February 2026 by the Transport and Connectivity Committee.

A Full Business Case will now be submitted to secure UK government funding from the City Region Strategic Transport Settlement, which is managed by the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority.

If the decision is made to build the scheme, we anticipate the project would be completed by the end of 2027.

Further information

Denmark Street and the surrounding area is just west of The Centre in Bristol. It is home to several cultural venues, including Bristol Hippodrome, O2 Academy and Bristol Beacon, as well as restaurants, bars, cafes, shops, offices and homes.

We asked for your views on new proposals to manage traffic and improve the public space around Denmark Street, Denmark Avenue, Frogmore Street and Trenchard Street.

The proposals would improve road safety and make the area more accessible for the large numbers of people visiting entertainment venues in the area. This would help to support Bristol’s nighttime economy.

Proposals

Bristol City Council proposed the following changes:

  • Options to close part of Denmark Street to motor vehicles either full-time or part-time. We asked you about your preference in the survey
  • Closing Denmark Avenue to motor vehicles full-time
  • Raised crossing points at the same level as the pavement to help pedestrians cross roads at two locations:
    • Denmark Street at the junction with St Augustine’s Parade (The Centre)
    • Culver Street at the junction with Frogmore Street
  • Tactile paving and dropped kerbs at junctions throughout the area to help people cross roads
  • Speed cushions on Frogmore Street and Trenchard Street
  • Improving public space with a new tree, planters, seating, cycle parking and e-scooter parking

A new zebra crossing is planned on Trenchard Street near Bristol Beacon. This would be built as part of a different project, so was not asked about in this consultation.
