Making Shortwood Road and Totshill Drive Safer

Making Shortwood Road and Totshill Drive Safer

Bristol City Council wants to make Shortwood Road and Totshill Drive in Hartcliffe safer. We are asking for your views on new ways to slow down traffic and help everyone follow the 20mph speed limit.

This follows strong local support from residents calling for action to reduce speeding and improve safety in the area.

Why We Are Proposing Changes

Although a 20mph speed limit is already in place, many drivers continue to exceed it, raising safety concerns - particularly at junctions and for vulnerable road users. In response to these concerns and the clear support from the community, we are proposing measures which aim to:

  • Help drivers stick to the speed limit
  • Make it easier to see at busy road crossings and where cars park badly
  • Make walking, cycling, and driving safer and easier

What We Are Proposing

Speed Cushions

Six pairs of speed cushions would be installed on each road. These are a cost-effective way to reduce vehicle speeds and do not require a lot of drainage works. Their design allows cyclists to pass alongside and emergency vehicles to straddle them without delay.

20mph Roundel Markings

We would paint large 20mph signs on the road to remind drivers of the speed limit.

Double Yellow Lines

Double yellow lines would be added at the following junctions to stop cars parking there and make it easier to see when crossing:

  • Shortwood Road: Lampton Avenue, Totshill Grove, Shortwood Walk
  • Totshill Drive: Lampton Avenue, Teyfant Walk, Totshill Grove

We are also proposing to improve safety and visibility on neighbouring roads by adding double yellow lines to the following junctions:

  • Witch Hazel Road: Lampton Avenue, Shortwood Walk, Totshill Drive, Longway Avenue
  • Lampton Avenue: Maidenhead Road, Tynte Avenue, Lampton Grove, Whitch Hazel Road

What Happens Next

This survey is part of the informal (non-statutory) engagement stage, where we are seeking views from residents before any formal decisions are made. Feedback received will help inform the development of the scheme and determine whether it progresses to the next stage in its current form.

Should the proposals move forward, a formal (statutory) consultation will follow, including the publication of a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO). At that point, any formal objections will be considered and reported to the Director of Economy of Place, before a final decision is made. If approved, the works will begin as soon as possible.
