Making Bamfield safer
We want to make Bamfield safer for the local community. As part of this, we are seeking your views on the proposed introduction of a 20mph speed limit and other potential measures designed to slow down traffic in the area. This follows strong local support from residents and councillors calling for action to reduce speeding and improve safety in the area.
Why are we proposing changes
Traffic speed on Bamfield are raising safety concerns, particularly at junctions and for vulnerable road users. In response to these concerns and the clear support from the community, we are proposing measures which aim to:
- Reduce traffic speeds
- Make it safer to cross at busy road crossings
- Make walking, cycling, and driving safer and easier
What we are proposing
20mph speed limit
We plan to introduce a 20mph speed limit from the junction with Hengrove Way along to the junction with Pinkhams Twist.
20mph road markings
Large 20mph signs would be painted on the road to remind drivers of the speed limit.
Speed cushions
Twelve pairs of speed cushions would also be installed along Bamfield between its junctions with Hengrove Way and Briery Leaze Road.
These are a cost-effective way to reduce vehicle speeds and do not require a lot of drainage works. Their design allows cyclists to pass alongside them and emergency vehicles to straddle them without the need to slow down.

An example of speed cushions, 20mph roundel markings and double yellow lines.
Marked parking bays
Marked parking bays would be painted on the west side of Bamfield between Houses 15 and 25. This will also help to encourage drivers to follow the speed limit as the road will be narrower.
Improved pedestrian crossings
Four existing traffic islands are proposed to be upgraded to pedestrian crossing points with tactile paving, along with two pedestrian crossing points added to the mini roundabout. The existing crossing point between Heatherdene and Tarnock Avenue would also have tactile paving installed.
Double yellow lines
Double yellow lines would be added between the junctions of Widcombe Path and Thurlestone.
Cycle symbols
Eleven sets of cycle symbols would be painted on the road at Bamfield’s junctions with its side roads. This will signal to road users to be aware of bicycles using this route.

What happens next
This survey is part of the informal (non-statutory) engagement stage, where we are seeking views from residents before any formal decisions are made. Feedback received will help inform the development of the scheme and determine whether it progresses to the next stage in its current form.
Should the proposals move forward, a formal (statutory) consultation will follow, including the publication of a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO). At that point, any formal objections will be considered and reported to the Director of Economy of Place, before a final decision is made. If approved, the works will begin as soon as possible.
Funding
This project has been prioritised by the Area Committee for Clifton Down and is funded through available Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funding.
