Measurements

Use metric measurements, except for miles and miles per hour.

Use numerals. For example '10 years' rather than 'ten years'.

Spell out the unit of meaurement the first time it's used. For example, 'miles per hour (mph)' or 'micrograms (mcg)'. You can then use the abbreviation. For example, '10mcg' or '30mph'.

Do not use a space between the numeral and abbreviated measurement. For example, use '20kg' not '20 kg'.

As their abbreviations are well known, don't spell out:

  • kg (kilograms)
  • g (grams)
  • ml (millilitres)
  • C (Celsius)

If the unit of measurement is only used once, do not abbreviate.

Never abbreviate:

  • years
  • months
  • days
  • hours
  • minutes

Temperature

Use the Celsius scale for temperature. Do not spell out 'Celsius' the first time it's used and do not use the degree symbol (°). For example, use '37C' or '-4C'.
