Apostrophes

Use an apostrophe to show:

  • when a word has been contracted, such as 'you're'
  • ownership of something

When using it to show ownership, if the possessor is:

  • singular, use an apostrophe followed by 's', such as 'Tom's cat', including when it ends in an 's', such as 'James's dog'
  • plural:
    • and ends in 's', use an apostrophe after the 's', such as 'council members' meeting room'
    • in all other cases, use an apostrophe followed by ‘s’, such as 'Children's service'
