Apostrophes
Use an apostrophe to show:
- when a word has been contracted, such as 'you're'
- ownership of something
When using it to show ownership, if the possessor is:
- singular, use an apostrophe followed by 's', such as 'Tom's cat', including when it ends in an 's', such as 'James's dog'
- plural:
- and ends in 's', use an apostrophe after the 's', such as 'council members' meeting room'
- in all other cases, use an apostrophe followed by ‘s’, such as 'Children's service'
