Private tenant at risk of becoming homeless

Private tenant at risk of becoming homeless

Find out what to do if you’re a private tenant and at risk of being homeless

Your landlord has to follow certain rules if they want to end your tenancy depending on the type of tenancy you have.

Tenancy types

If you’re not sure about your type of tenancy or licence, you can use Shelter’s tenancy rights checker to find out more.

Once you know what type of tenancy you have, you’ll be able to find out more about your rights as a private tenant.

Giving notice of eviction

Your landlord has to notify you in writing if they want to evict you from their property, but they must have a valid reason.  In most situations verbal notice is not legal, even if you don’t pay rent.

Find out more about what to do if your landlord is threatening to evict you.

Harassment or illegal eviction

If you’re being harassed by your landlord or think that you’re being evicted illegally, you can get help from our Tenancy Relations Team.
