Details of the m1 metrobus extension plan, changes to the plan, and when the construction will start and finish.

m1 metrobus extension

The m1 metrobus route currently travels between Cribbs Causeway and Hengrove Park.

The plan is to extend the route from Hengrove Park Leisure Centre to Imperial Retail Park.

The extension plan will:

  • extend the m1 metrobus route from Hengrove Park Leisure Centre through the new housing development at William Jessop Way, along Hawfield Road and onto Imperial Retail Park
  • replace bus stops at Imperial Park and Hawkfield Road with high quality, metrobus branded bus shelters that include real-time information and raised platform waiting areas to provide step-free access onto the metrobus

Active travel improvements

We plan to make active travel routes in the Hawfield Road area in Hartcliffe safer.

This will encourage more people to walk, wheel and cycle.

We will:

  • install a two-way cycle path along Hawkfield Road that is separated from the pavement and road
  • upgrade pedestrian and cycling crossings on Hawkfield Road, Briscoes Avenue, Fulford Road and Whitchurch Lane
  • reduce speed limits and adding new traffic calming measures, including raised tables (flat, elevated sections of the road that are built higher than the surrounding road) and small speed bumps
  • close part of Butterfly Lane, at its junction with Hawkfield Road, to motorised traffic
  • restrict parking and loading long Hawkfield Road

Project funds

This project is being funded by the UK government through the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement.

This is guaranteed by the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority.

Public consultation results

We asked for views on proposals through a public consultation in August and September 2024.

The statutory consultation, on the Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) elements of the scheme, took place from 12 September to 6 October 2025.

Changes to the plan

We've made some key changes to enhance road safety.

These changes are based on feedback through the public consultation and further road safety audits, and quality assurance processes.

All other areas of the designs remain the same.

Hawkfield Road

We will:

  • move the end of the separated cycle path away from the toucan crossing on Hawkfield Road, between Hengrove Way roundabout and Whitchurch Lane
  • add railings to the bus stop bypasses along the westside of Hawkfield Road
  • enhance the pedestrian crossing on Hawkfield Road by including zebra crossings on all side road junctions
  • add an extra pedestrian crossing on Hawkfield Road to provide more convenient access with Petherton Road
  • add no loading at peak times ‘Monday to Friday, 7am to 9.30am and 4pm to 6.30pm' along the west of Hawkfield Road, between Whitchurch Lane and Fulford Road
  • install timber kerb along the separated cycle path along Hawkfield Road, after Briscoes Avenue, to protect the trees Hengrove roundabout and Whitchurch Lane

Hengrove roundabout and Whitchurch Lane

We will:

  • plant wildflowers on the embankment between Hengrove roundabout and Whitchurch Lane
  • install a formal WESTscoot/WESTbike parking bay for e-scooters and e-bikes next to the cycle path and pavement near Whitchurch Lane

Fulford Road

We'll install cycle stands at the Fulford Road northbound bus stop.

Timelines

Construction will start from early January 2026.

It will start at the northern end of Hawkfield Road by Hengrove roundabout.

The work will be carried out in phases along Hawkfield Road to its junction with Butterfly Lane.

Construction should be completed by autumn 2026.

Traffic management

Two-way temporary traffic lights will be installed to enable the works to take place.

Temporarily close Hawfield Road's junctions

We'll install new crossings with raised tables.

To do this we will need to temporarily close Hawfield Road's junctions with:

  • Whitchurch Lane
  • Briscoes Avenue
  • Fulford Road

Residents will still have access via alternative routes.
