What we're doing

We're starting a project to make St Mark's Road in Easton safer, more accessible and pleasant.

This work will start on Monday 19 October 2026 and is expected to take around 11 weeks to complete.

We'll be updating this page as the programme gets underway.

The project will focus on resurfacing St Mark's Road and painting new road markings.

Further improvements include:

  • Building two speed tables, which are raised flat sections of the road that help slow down traffic
  • Extending the pavement at the junction with Berwick Road to make it easier to cross the road
  • Extending the pavement outside the former Thali cafe
  • Repainting the cycle lane that travels against the flow of traffic
  • Adding more cycle parking
  • Introducing timed parking restrictions from Monday to Friday for up to three hours between 9am and 5pm, to increase parking turnover and improve access to shops and services in the area
  • Creating new loading and disabled parking bays
  • Adding dropped kerbs next to the disabled parking bays and tactile paving at crossing points
  • Repainting or replacing the bespoke bollards
  • Painting new double yellow lines between Nicholas Road and St Mark's Terrace

Lighting upgrade

We'll also be upgrading the street lighting and adding more lampposts.

To do this safely, we need to remove the festoon lighting, which was put up by a local business. As this lighting is old, and could become unsafe, it is unlikely to go back up in its current form.

Access and disruption

The work will be carried out in phases so that the majority of St Mark's Road can remain open. However, some sections will need to close temporarily.

Road resurfacing works will take place towards the end of the project, when a full road closure will be needed. We're aiming for this to be done overnight to reduce disruption.

Our contractor will also be placing their cabin at the end of Mivart Street, where it meets St Mark's Road. Mivart Street will be temporarily closed to through traffic at this junction while construction work is taking place. Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout.

Businesses on St Mark's Road will remain open throughout the works.

Project background

Our original proposals for St Mark's Road included pedestrianising the street.

However, following feedback from residents, businesses and the wider community, we dropped the plans in 2021 and developed new plans in partnership with St Mark's Road businesses to reflect local priorities.

Funding

We're funding the £186,000 St Mark's Road improvement project using community infrastructure levy funding and highways maintenance budget.
