Bullet point lists

Use unordered bullet point lists to make text easier to read.

Lists should be as short as possible, with a limit of about 6 items.

Each item should be as short and simple as possible.

Use:

  • a lead-in line and write the points so they follow on from the lead-in line
  • a colon at the end of the lead-in line
  • lowercase at the start of the bullet, unless it's a name or acronym

Don't:

  • use full stops within bullet points, use a colon or comma or start a new bullet point instead
  • say 'or' at the start or end of bullet points
  • put any punctuation at the end of bullet points, even the last one

If it’s not possible to have a lead-in line before your bullet point list:

  • give your list a heading
  • start each bullet point with a capital letter
  • end each bullet point with a full stop

For example:

What to do with your waste

  • Keep clinical waste separate from other bins and recycling.
  • Store it in a yellow box or sack.
  • Double bag it, if the waste is particularly wet or heavy.
