Phone and phone numbers
Use 'call' when providing a phone number. For example, 'call 0117 922 2000'.
Use 'phone' not 'telephone'.
Group numbers
Group numbers in a phone number to make it easier to read.
For landline numbers, separate the area code, local exchange and local number. This means for Bristol numbers, you should put a space after the fourth and seventh numbers. For example, '0117 922 2000'.
For mobile numbers, put a space after the fifth number. For example, '07123 456789'.
For numbers that are designed to be memorable, use that format instead. For example, '0800 11 22 33' or '0800 111 222'.
Do not put links on phone numbers
It is possible to mark up phone numbers as links. For example: 0117 922 2000
However, most browsers will automatically detect phone numbers and display them as links.
Also, having a link on a device that doesn't support phone calls could be confusing for a user. If they click on the link, it will start a setup process, unless the user has already set up a default app.
If you do need to mark up a phone number with a link, set it so it does not display as a link on a device that cannot make calls.
