Current Lord Mayor

Current Lord Mayor

Our current Lord Mayor of Bristol and Deputy Lord Mayor.

Our Lord Mayor

The Right Honourable Lord Mayor of Bristol is Councillor Steve Smith.

"I feel incredibly lucky to have been asked to become Bristol’s Lord Mayor and First Citizen.  It’s a huge honour to join a line which stretches back through over 800 years of Mayors and Lord Mayors of our City.

I grew up in Birmingham but moved to Bristol in 2005 after marrying my wife and now Lady Mayoress Kath, who was born and brought up in Westbury-on-Trym.  We have lived in Westbury for 16 years now, bringing up our two children here, and I’m proud to represent the area as one of the Councillors for Westbury-on-Trym and Henleaze.

One of the joys of being a Councillor is that I’ve learned a huge amount about the ward that I represent, it’s history, people and organisations.  I hope during my year as Lord Mayor that I can extend that learning across the whole city by meeting as many people and groups as I possibly can in every part of Bristol.

I want to use my time as Lord Mayor to shine a light on volunteers across Bristol and thank them for the incredible work that they do to make our city a better place. From vaccine marshals to custody visitors, scout leaders to litter pickers, thousands of people give their time freely to serve others with no expectation of reward, simply the knowledge that they are doing a good thing.

This has never been more true than during the pandemic and I look forward to thanking as many volunteers as possible on behalf of the whole city for the amazing service that they give."

Our Deputy Lord Mayor

The Deputy Lord Mayor is Councillor Andrew Varney.

"I am absolutely honoured and delighted to be representing our beautiful city of Bristol as Deputy Lord Mayor for 2021 to 2022. Coming from a humble background, it is certainly a position I never expected to have.

I was born and raised in Weston-super-Mare in 1968. My father was originally from Bristol and my mother was from Bath so I have a great affinity towards the West Country and have always enjoyed visiting its historic towns and cities and walking and cycling in the beautiful countryside.

Unfortunately, at the age of three, my parents divorced and my mother was tasked with raising her children by herself. I hope she did a good job!

In 1986 I left home to study for a degree in Geography at Plymouth Polytechnic and later a PGCE at Oxford University. Like many young people, I wanted to travel and see the world and so spent a number of years teaching overseas in Hong Kong and Japan. I’m still trying to get to grips with the Japanese language though!

I met my partner, Robbie, in 1998 and we spent ten years in Dublin before moving together to Bristol in 2008, settling first in Knowle and then Brislington.

Until recently, I was teaching at an international school in Clifton. I like working in international environments as I enjoy meeting people from all over the world and learning about different cultures. I also love the fact that Bristol is such a great multicultural city and I am looking forward to meeting as many people as possible and celebrating this city’s wonderful diversity during my year as Deputy Lord Mayor."
