Homelessness is a complex and national issue and in Bristol we work with over 6000 families or individuals who are homeless or at high risk of homelessness.
The main drivers for homelessness are poverty and a lack of affordable housing. There are many reasons or life events that lead to homelessness, including:
- losing a job
- eviction from private rented accommodation
- domestic violence
- a breakdown in a relationship
- having to leave the family home
In Bristol, we are placing considerable investment into our Housing Options service, redesigning how we work and expanding our team so we can proactively tackle, address and reduce homelessness within our city.
Our aims
Working collaboratively with the wider housing sector, we aim to:
- focus on the prevention of homelessness by encouraging those at risk of homelessness to seek help from us early, maximising the opportunity for alternative, preventative solutions
- improve positive outcomes for households (such as sustaining existing tenancies)
- increase access to private pented accommodation
- reduce the number of households living in temporary accommodation
Our housing advisors, as part of the homelessness prevention team, have a vital role in achieving this. They are specialists in working with families and single people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, ascertaining their need and identifying the most appropriate route to assist them in finding solutions to their housing problems.
