We're currently receiving a high volume of enquiries which may cause delays in processing changes to council tax accounts.
You don't need to send more than one enquiry about the same thing. We'll respond to you as quickly as possible.
It's important to update your council tax information if you're:
- moving into Bristol: you'll need to register for council tax at your new address
- moving from one Bristol address to another: you must be named on your current council tax account before you tell us you're moving
- leaving Bristol: you must be named on your current council tax account before you tell us you're moving
This helps make sure that your council tax records are accurate and up to date. It will also help avoid unnecessary charges and will make sure you're billed correctly.
Lodging or moving into a House of Multiple Occupation (HMO)
If you'll be a lodger living with a landlord at the property, or you're moving into a House of Multiple Occupation (HMO), you're usually not responsible for council tax.
If you're not named on a joint tenancy agreement (for example, if you are renting a room only), you're not legally liable for the bill.
Read the full legislative definition of an HMO. If this applies to you, you don't need to use our tell us you're moving home form. You'll instead need to use our contact us form below and select:
- 'There has been a change in where I live or who lives with me'
- Then choose 'None of the above'

Tell us you're moving home
If you're not lodging or moving into an HMO, you can use our tell us you're moving home form.

- your old and new addresses
- move-in and move-out dates

If you get a council tax reduction (means tested benefit)
You'll also need to tell the council tax reduction team that you've moved.
