What you can use a repairs loan or grant for, types of loans and grants and how to apply.

If you need to make repairs to your home, we may be able to give you a loan or a small grant to cover the cost.

A loan is money that you'll have to pay back. 

A grant is money that you won't need to pay back.

You'll need to apply for a loan first.

Who can apply for a loan

You can apply for one of our loans if you:

  • own and live in your property
  • are a private landlord
  • have a property that needs repairs

Standard loan

Our standard loan is for essential repairs to a property such as:

  • dealing with damp problems
  • large electrical and plumbing work such as rewiring 
  • replacing rotting windows and doors 
  • structural work such as replacing rotten lintels or underpinning
  • roof repairs
  • replacing broken heating systems

The maximum loan amount is £20,000.

If the works are going to cost less than £7,500 you only need to get one quote for how much it's going to cost. If the works are over £7,500, you'll need two quotes.

  • help you through the process of applying for a home improvement loan
  • check your eligibility for a loan
  • see how much you could borrow
  • advise on the loan best suited to you

Staying independent loan

Our staying independent loan can be used if:

  • you're an owner occupier 
  • you need to adapt your home to prepare for a deteriorating medical condition

To get this loan you must:

  • own and live in your property
  • have an assessed need but cannot qualify for a Disabled Facilities Grant
  • choose to self-fund instead

How much you can get

The maximum loan amount is £20,000.  

If the works are going to cost less than £7,500 you only need to get one quote for how much it's going to cost.

If the works are over £7,500, you'll need two quotes.

Homes for Ukraine loans

This loan is to bring empty homes back into use to be let to Ukrainian refugees.

Any works funded by this loan:

  • will be scheduled and managed by We Care and Repair
  • must meet the relevant private renting standards applicable for the property, which in some cases could be licensing standards

All properties will be let under a 5 year scheme.

How much you can get

The maximum loan is £20,000 per self-contained unit, capped at £60,000 per property repayable over a five-year term.

0% interest rate will be applied for these loans.

If your property is suitable and you're happy with the terms, you'll then be referred to WE Care and Repair who will do a property survey.

Only properties that can be brought back into use for no more than £20,000 will be considered.
