Information on our review of the local plan and how to take part.

Cross-boundary cooperation

A Spatial Development Strategy (SDS) and is no longer being progressed by the West of England Combined Authority (WECA).

The local plans for Bristol, Bath & North East Somerset, and South Gloucestershire will now provide the strategic planning framework for the West of England Combined Authority area.

The issue of housing need and other cross-boundary strategic matters will be addressed through individual local plans for each of the local councils.

The councils will continue to work with each other and with other key bodies on strategic, cross boundary matters as they prepare their local plans.

The evidence base prepared so far to inform the Spatial Development Strategy will be published on the WECA website and will be reviewed and used as appropriate to inform the councils' local plans.

We will work with our neighbouring authorities to produce statements of common ground to demonstrate how we've cooperated towards addressing strategic, cross boundary matters.

Local plan review

The review of the local plan is continuing. It will set out how Bristol will develop over the next 20 years.

It will help deliver the new homes and jobs we need and safeguard the environmental assets we value.

We aim to have a new plan in place by Autumn 2024 following further consultation and engagement. Our timetable is:

  • 28 November 2022 to 20 January 2023: further consultation on the plan's policies and proposals
  • Summer 2023: plan to be published for representations
  • Early 2024: examination by planning inspector
  • Autumn 2024: adopt the new local plan
