Once you're sure you won't return to smoking, you can try quitting vaping too.

Try quitting vaping at a time that suits you – if you're stressed or busy, it might not be a good time.

Quit vaping with nicotine replacement therapies (NRT)

You can use NRT, like gum, patches or inhalators, to help you quit vaping.

NRT helps people manage cravings when they quit smoking, and they can also help with quitting vaping.

Talk to your pharmacist about the right NRT for you. Most people find using two products together the most effective, for example a patch and gum.

If you're not ready to quit vaping in one go, here are some tips for quitting gradually:

Quit vaping gradually

Lower your nicotine strength

Lower the nicotine strength of your e-liquid slowly over weeks or even months. It's not a race, do this at a pace that feels manageable for you.

It's normal to vape a bit more immediately after lowering your nicotine strength.

Go to a specialist vape shop and they can help you work out which e-liquid to use at what time.

Limit the places you vape

Pick a few places where you won't vape. For example, if you usually vape inside at home, pick some rooms to keep vape free.

Increase breaks between vape sessions

Start to increase the time between vaping and cut down on the number of puffs you take. For example, if you usually vape every 20 minutes, try to stretch this to 40 minutes.

Little by little, you'll notice that you can go longer without needing to vape.

Get support

Quitting is easier if you have support. Tell your friends and family that you're trying to quit, so they can hold you accountable and cheer you on.

If you have a friend who vapes, see if they want to quit too. You can motivate each other.

Distract yourself

When a craving hits, try having a sip of water or going for a walk.

Keep your hands busy by doing a puzzle or crossword on your phone.

Remember, quitting vaping is difficult and can take a few tries

If you're struggling to quit or feeling tempted to take up smoking again, it's fine to keep vaping for a short time.

Going back to vaping is much better than smoking. You can try quitting vaping again when you're ready.
