A37 Wells Road Tree Removal Consultation
Location
Both trees are located on Wells Road’s central reservation by the junction with Davids Road, in the Stockwood ward area of south Bristol.
The location of the two trees is shown in the image below:

Reason for removal
The two trees need to be removed to create space for new bus lanes. If the trees were to be retained, they would risk causing damage to vehicles and/or possible road traffic collisions.
The bus lanes on Wells Road are part of the A4018 and A37 project, also known as the Bus Route 2 project, to make buses more reliable and improve walking, wheeling and cycling routes.
More information about this project can be found on the Bristol on the Move website.
Other solutions that have been considered
Other design options, such as leaving the trees where they are and widening the road, are unfeasible because of the constrained space.
Relocating the trees is not possible because of their size and their chances of survival would be low.
Replacing the tree
We would replace the trees with two new trees planted nearby. Possible locations are being considered.
Commitment to trees
As a council, we are committed to increasing the number of trees in Bristol with 100,000 trees planted since 2015 as part of the One Tree Per Child and Trees for Streets programmes.
Timings
If approved, we would remove the trees in early 2027 to avoid bird nesting season.
