Redcliff Hill tree removal consultation

We are consulting on the felling of one tree on Redcliff Hill to create space for a new cycle lane that is part of the Redcliffe Way transport corridor project. The tree, planted in 2000, is a lime (Tilia X europea).

Location

The tree is near to the junction with Redcliffe Roundabout. It is located on the footpath on the western side of Redcliff Hill, on the opposite side of the road to St Mary Redcliffe Church.

The location of the tree is shown in the image below:

Reason for removal

The tree needs to be removed to create space for a new two-way separated cycle lane and footpath.

These changes are part of the Redcliffe Way project and will provide a safer route to walk, wheel and cycle between south Bristol, Temple Meads and the city centre. Find out more about the Redcliffe Way scheme on the Bristol on the Move website.

Other solutions that have been considered

Other design options for this project were considered but unfortunately were unfeasible because of maintenance and health and safety concerns.

The tree is still growing, meaning that its roots could damage the proposed cycle lane. There were also concerns that during construction the tree could be damaged, making it unstable and susceptible to disease.

Because of the size of the tree, moving it to another location is not possible as the chances of survival are low.

Replacing the tree

20 new trees will be planted as part of the connecting Bedminster Bridges project. We are also looking to plant extra trees within the other schemes that make up the City Centre transport corridor programme.

Commitment to trees

As a council, we are committed to increasing the number of trees in Bristol with 100,000 trees planted since 2015 as part of the One Tree Per Child and Trees for Streets programmes.

Timings

If the removal is approved, the tree would be removed in early 2027 to avoid bird nesting season.
