Avon Riversides 2100

Better protecting Bristol and neighbouring communities from flooding along the River Avon and enhancing the riverside for people and nature.

Avon Riversides 2100 (formerly the Bristol Avon Flood Strategy) is a long-term project to better protect homes and businesses from both tidal and fluvial flooding along the River Avon up to and beyond the year 2100. Delivered in partnership between Bristol City Council, the Environment Agency and the West of England Combined Authority,  the scheme will benefit Bristol – from St. Anne's through to Shirehampton – and nearby communities. We will tailor the flood defences to each location, bringing benefits all year, not just during floods. Where we can, we'll design them with local communities, so they fit the local environment. By designing defences that improve public spaces, we aim to deliver:

• new open spaces
• improved cycling, walking and wheeling routes
• enhanced riversides
• celebrated heritage features
• new homes
• certainty for new and existing businesses to grow

This approach will help to better protect Bristol while creating a more active, prosperous and resilient city.

2020 Consultation on Bristol Avon Flood Strategy

Between October and December 2020, we delivered a formal consultation to gather feedback from the local community and stakeholder groups on the Bristol Avon Flood Strategy (rebranded Avon Riversides 2100 in late 2025). Initially, the consultation was targeted towards those currently at risk of flooding. It was later opened more widely.
