About our duty to consult on the felling of street trees, our consultations and what we do not have to consult on.

Trees in Bristol

We have a statutory duty to consult with local residents about the felling of street trees. This makes sure we consider people's views and makes the decision making process more open.

Information about the duty to consult is available on the IHE website

We must:

  • put a notice on the street trees affected
  • publish the notice on our website
  • make a copy of the notice available at our offices
  • consult for at least 28 days starting from when the notice is put on the tree
  • publish a response to the consultation, including our decision, no later than 28 days before any felling takes place

We do not have to consult on street tree felling if the tree:

  • has a diameter of less than 80mm
  • is dead and no longer produces leaves or foliage when it should
  • must be felled under the Plant Health Act 1967
  • is dangerous or expected to become dangerous prior to the next scheduled inspection
  • is causing an obstruction, as defined by the Equality Act 2010
  • has to be felled due to outline planning or planning permission for developments
