Always remember: Phone. Float. Throw.

If you see someone in danger
- Act fast. Call 999.
- Tell them to float on their back “Float to Live”.
- If you can, throw something that floats, such as a row line, life ring or any buoyant object.
- Do not enter the water yourself, this is very dangerous.
- Keep talking to them and reassure them until help arrives.
Float to Live
- Fight your instincts to swim.
- Lie back and keep your airways clear, push your stomach up and extend your limbs, move your hands and feet to stay afloat.
- Try and control your breathing.
- Once your breathing is controlled, try and make your way towards safety.
Staying safe around Bristol Harbour
- Do not swim unless you're at a supervised swim session. The water is cold all year round, and cold-water shock can overwhelm even strong swimmers.
- Harbour conditions can change quickly. Water can be deep, fast moving and unpredictable.
- Bristol Harbour has a deep sluice that pulls water and silt out into the river. This creates strong and dangerous underwater currents.
- Be careful near the edge, especially at night or after drinking alcohol.
- Always look out for your friends and avoid risky behaviour near the water.
- Bristol Harbour is a working harbour. Boats and other vessels continually move around the harbour.
