High street improvements

What we're doing to improve high streets in Bristol.

What we've done

In July 2021, Bristol secured £4.725 million of funding to help Bristol's high streets and the city centre recover from the impact of COVID-19 and to help get more people visiting and using these places.

To understand what improvements are needed and what events and activities people would like to see in each of the priority areas we've been working with:

  • businesses
  • residents
  • community groups
  • culture and events organisations

We collected feedback between September 2021 and March 2022 through online surveys, focus groups, creative workshops and on-street engagement.

To share the plans for street scene and greening improvements for each area, we have been running face-to-face drop-in events and online sessions for the public, business and other interested stakeholders.

Street scene and greening plans

The plans take into account feedback from local residents, businesses and other interested stakeholders, the amount of funding available and the physical constraints of each area. For example, services running below ground would prevent planting a tree.

Face-to-face drop-in sessions

Next steps

The council's City Centre and High Streets Team have secured £1m of additional funding to make street scene and greening improvements and to deliver culture and events activities in three more of high streets across the city.

To make sure the activity and improvements match the challenges facing each individual high street, we are gathering information and ideas from businesses, residents, and visitors on improvements for:

  • Ashley Road/Grosvenor Road in St Paul's
  • Crow Lane in Henbury
  • Oatlands Avenue in Whitchurch

The information gathered from the surveys will be used to develop action plans for each of these areas.

The closing date for the surveys is Thursday 14 March.

Hard copies of the survey for residents and freepost envelopes are available in Crow Lane Library, Whitchurch Library and St Pauls Library.
