Bristol and Bath Railway Path: temporary closure

Bristol and Bath Railway Path: temporary closure

Where and when the railway path will be closed, information on the diversion, the work we’re doing and why

The Bristol and Bath Railway Path will be closed between Gordon Road and Bruce Road from Monday 18 February until Friday 22 February.

This is so we can carry out some works to trees before the start of the bird nesting season in March.

There will be a signposted diversion around the closed section of path. Vehicles may be using the section of path between Clay Bottom and Gordon Road during this time.

What we are doing

We are carrying out tree works in the area opposite the Chocolate Factory.

This includes:

  • removing three willow trees and one poplar that are unstable, in decline or have defects that are weakening the trees
  • removing seven other willow trees and poplars to prevent further root damage to the path and prepare for future resurfacing work
  • pollarding five large willows (cutting off the top and branches to encourage new growth at the tops of the trees)
  • cutting back branches that are touching buildings

We'll keep most of the trees on that section of path. We'll keep the effect on the wildlife corridor minimal to avoid disturbing wildlife.

Further closure

We’ll close other sections of the path in April for resurfacing work and to repair root damage. We need to do this work when the weather is warmer, to make sure the surface of the new path stays intact.

We’ll publish information on these closures nearer the time.
