The Annual Household Canvass

The Annual Household Canvass will begin in August. Every household will receive a Household Enquiry Form (HEF).

Register To Vote

The way you register to vote has changed to Individual Electoral Registration (IER). Everybody needs to register themselves individually, for example, a family member can't register you.

If you need help to register online, visit your local library or our Citizen Service Point at 100 Temple Street.

If you don't want to register online you can download and print paper forms from the GOV.UK website. You can also call us on 0117 922 3400 to request a registration form, but you can't register over the phone.

What you need to know

You'll need your National Insurance number to register.
You can find this on your National Insurance card, or in official paperwork like payslips, or letters about benefits or tax credits. You can find a lost National Insurance number on the GOV.UK website.

If you can't provide your National Insurance number you'll be asked to explain why during your application. We’ll then contact you for evidence about your identity.

  • To vote in the upcoming elections and referendums you must be on the electoral register.
  • By law you must respond to an invitation to register to vote, or you could be fined up to £80.
  • You may find it difficult getting credit for a loan, mortgage or other financial agreement if you are not on the register.

After you've registered

Filling out a registration form doesn't automatically add you to the electoral register. We have to check your details first, then you’ll receive a letter from us either confirming that you’re registered, or asking you for more information.

It's against the law to vote more than once in a UK Parliamentary election.
