86% of Bristol's roads are already 20mph, but some residential roads are still 30mph. We want to make sure everyone can benefit from safer speeds in our city.
We've assessed roads where a 20mph limit may increase safety, looking at:
- whether people live on the road
- whether they form part of a route to and from school
- the history of collisions
- whether the road is used by many people walking, cycling, or riding motorcycles, those most at risk of harm on Bristol's roads
- locations where people have raised safety concerns
Our review has identified about 100 roads across the city that would benefit from safer 20mph speed limits.
These roads make up roughly 8% of Bristol's road network, but account for around 30% of serious injuries and fatalities in Bristol.
We asked for your views on the proposals in April and May 2026. We're now looking at this feedback to develop a final set of proposals for new 20mph speed limits, which will be reviewed by Transport Committee.
