What the Household Energy Payment is, what you need to do and further information

What the Household Energy Payment is

The household energy payment is a £100 payment for eligible households. This to help with rising energy costs.

This was set by the Government in the Autumn Budget on 28 October 2026.

The Government has announced that:

  • households in council tax Bands A to D in England will be eligible for a one-off £100 payment
  • payments are expected to begin from January 2027
  • households that pay their council tax by Direct Debit are expected to receive the payment automatically.
  • households that do not pay by Direct Debit may be asked to provide payment details through a secure claims process

If you're not sure which council tax band your home is in, you can find it in the top section of your council tax bill next to 'Property Band', or check online at Check your Council Tax band - GOV.UK.

What you need to do

There is currently nothing you need to do and you do not need to contact us about the Household Energy Payment at this stage.

If you do not currently pay by Direct Debit, you may wish to consider setting one up. This could help make the payment process quicker and easier when the scheme launches.

Visit our pay your council tax page for details.
