Clean Air Zone charges and Penalty Charge Notices revenue

How the money from Clean Air Zone charges and Penalty Charge Notices is used

Bristol's Clean Air Zone started on 28 November 2022 to reduce air pollution and improve the health of everyone living and visiting the city.  The zone is not intended or created to generate profit.  Funds from charges are used to cover the costs of operating the zone which includes:

• intallation and maintenance of cameras

• installation and maintenance of signs

• staff and administration costs

• costs of decommissioning cameras or changes to the zone

If there is money left after paying operational costs, it must be spent on local projects.  This includes to help:

• drivers with vehicles which don't meet the zone's emission standards to upgrade by offering  Clean Air Zone financial support 

• people travel in more sustainable ways by offering free active travel support

Money from Clean Air Zone charges can also be allocated to existing transport schemes for example:

• Bristol City Centre
