We've put in 15 cycle hangars across the East Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood area.

We used feedback in the early stages of the project to choose the 15 locations. In late 2023 and early 2024, we contacted all residents living near to the proposed locations to get feedback. We made changes to the locations based on this feedback - you said, we did!

Cycle hangar locations

Barton Hill

  • Avonvale Road
  • Ford Street
  • Holmes Street: you suggested alternative locations, which we explored but they were found not to be feasible
  • Lancaster Street: you said more cycle parking was needed in the area and there was a high level of interest, so we installed a hangar on Lancaster Street, in addition to the one on York Street
  • Mildred Street: you said the proposed hangar was on the wrong side of the street, we moved it to the western side of the street
  • Salisbury Street, 2 hangars
  • York Street: you said more cycle parking was needed and there was a high level of interest, including on surrounding streets, so we installed an additional hangar on Lancaster Street. We also explored moving the York Street hangar to a different street but there were no suitable locations nearby

Redfield

  • Verrier Road: you said the hangar would be more suitable on Church Road, we explored locations on Church Road but it was found not to be suitable due to road safety concerns and potential removal of motorcycle bays
  • Corner of Victoria Avenue and Witchell Road: you were concerned about damage to the hangar from cars, we're going to install bollards on the side of the hangar

St George

  • Beaconsfield Road: you said the proposed location was too close to Church Road and it would be more appropriate further south, we moved the hangar further south, it's now outside Whitebeam Court
  • Diamond Road
  • Hedwick Avenue
  • Northcote Road: you were concerned about road space being wasted and asked that the hangar be moved closer to the double yellow lines, we moved it closed
  • Richmond Road

Depending on funding and how the trial scheme goes, we hope to rollout more cycle hangars as part of the permanent scheme.

Use a cycle hangar

It costs £42.50 a year plus a one-off £25 key deposit to use a cycle hangar. This pays for maintenance and enforcement.

Cycle hangars offer a high level of security. Our hangars have Diamond accreditation from Sold Secure. However, you should still lock your bike within the hangar.

We cannot offer insurance for bikes in the hangar and the impact of using a hangar on your own insurance will depend on your policy. Check with your provider, if you're not sure. Under most policies, cycle hangars are categorised as "outside of the home", which may mean your home insurance doesn't cover your bike.
