Why we use body worn cameras (BWCs), which teams carry them, how they will be used, and our body cam procedures.
Some council staff and contractors wear body worn cameras while they carry out their duties.
Staff may start recording if:
- a situation becomes confrontational
- they believe they're at risk of verbal or physical abuse
- someone behaves in an aggressive or threatening way
Why we use BWCs
Body cameras help to:
- deter verbal and physical abuse
- support police investigations into aggression or verbal and physical abuse
- protect staff at work
- allow staff to keep their hands free while recording
Who uses body cameras
Body cameras are used by:
- civil enforcement officers
- highways and traffic officers
- contractors working on behalf of Bristol City Council
All users are trained before they use body cameras. Training includes:
- using the equipment
- when to start and stop recording
- legal responsibilities
How they will be used
Body cameras are used openly.
Staff will usually tell you when recording is about to start, unless there is an emergency.
They don't need your consent to record.
