What Libraries of Sanctuary are, how to join a library and what we offer

We want to become a Library of Sanctuary in 2026. This would recognise the work Bristol Libraries already does as part of our universal service for residents and visitors.

We're a supporting organisation of Bristol City of Sanctuary, meaning we:

  • recognise the contribution of asylum-seekers and refugees to our city
  • are committed to welcoming and including them in our activities

Libraries are safe spaces. We don't track people seeking asylum, and we don't report interactions with sanctuary seekers to official bodies.

Anyone living, working or studying in Bristol can join.

If you're new to Bristol or don't have documents yet speak to staff about temporary membership for adults.

Membership is free and you can join even if you don't have ID yet. We do not require ID for children.
