Libby/Pressreader Newspapers

Read digital newspapers for free with your library card.

Access the full text of 1000+ daily, weekly and monthly newspapers from over 100 countries (and in 60 languages).

Available titles include:

  • The Guardian
  • Bristol Post
  • Daily Mirror
  • Daily Telegraph
  • Independent
  • Observer
  • Western Daily Press
  • and hundreds more    

Newspapers can be streamed online via:

  • a tablet
  • a smart phone (app available for iOS, Android and Kindle Fire)
  • a web browser

Titles can be read in either:

  • Page View: full text of the paper as it would appear in the print version, or
  • Text View: article based 

There are options to change the interface language from English to a number of other languages, including Arabic, French, German and Spanish. 

There's an option to have the paper read out loud and in your chosen language.

How it works

For smartphone or tablet:  

  • download the free Libby app from the Apple Store or Google Play or
  • go to the Libby website, click on 'search for a library' and select your local library (type in Libraries West and then select the library authority you are a member of from the drop down list) and then log on with your library membership number and PIN

For Windows, Mac and Chromebook:

If you have a Windows or Mac computer or a Chromebook you'll need to log on at the Libby website, as there isn't a separate app available for these devices.

For Kindle Fire:

Visit the Libby website for help and to download the Libby app.

Libby Magazines

This resource gives access to around 3,000 online magazines suitable for a range of age groups. It also includes access to around three years' back copies.

You can download them to your portable device, or stream them on a computer.

If you're asked for payment, you're no longer browsing the free library subscription.

Access eMagazines 

You must be a member of the library as you'll need your library card number and PIN.

eComics

This collection has around 2,800 comics and graphic novels suitable for a wide range of age groups.

You can download them to your portable device, or stream them on a computer.

This resource has full runs, where possible, of 48 national and regional nineteenth century newspapers.

British Newspaper Archive (BNA)

This resource gives access to British Library newspapers, from the early 17th century to the late 20th century.

Many of the titles are small regional newspapers.

You'll need to:

  • register with the BNA using a library computer
  • create a username and password on your first visit
  • log in every time you want to use BNA

Home access is limited. You can only search newspapers and see a list of results. You can't view or print any articles.

Illustrated London News (ILN)

This resource is a copy of the ILN from 1842 to 2003. It includes contributions by Robert Louis Stevenson, Charles Dickens, Thomas Hardy, Wilkie Collins, Rudyard Kipling, and Agatha Christie.

John Johnson Collection: printed ephemera

This resource gives access to the John Johnson Collection, one of the most important collections of printed ephemera in the world.

It includes collectible booklets, leaflets and pamphlets covering aspects of everyday life in Britain in the eighteenth, nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
