Running is a great free activity for everyone. It's a fantastic way to spend time with friends and family, meet new people, explore new places and get out and visit some of our many parks and green spaces.
Run4Life offers free beginner running courses and social runs coordinated by volunteers. The courses are supported by our Run4Life Bristol Facebook group, where people can share their journeys and keep in touch with leaders and other runners.

We offer courses in winter, spring and autumn, but these are subject to available funding.
The courses are often in:
- North Bristol: Southmead and Lawrence Weston
- Hengrove Park Leisure Centre
- St George Park
- Eastville Park
- Lockleaze Open Space (Stoke Park)
Free Beginners Running Courses: 0 to 35 minutes
These are 12 weeks long, starting with a taster session if you would like to try before committing. The courses gradually build up from 30 to 60 seconds of jogging and walking intervals to 35 minutes of continuous running.
The courses are friendly and sociable and are open to anyone aged 13 and over. We recommend that you walk briskly for 30 minutes three times a week in preparation for the course.
We have had thousands of 0 to 35 graduates over the past three years, come and join us.
You can also join us part way through a course if you would like help with getting back into running.
Walk to Jog
Join our four week course if:
- 0 to 30 second jogs are too much to start with
- you haven't done any exercise in a while
You'll start with getting comfortable with 30 minutes of walking. When you are ready, we'll introduce very short jogs.
This will build you up to being ready to join the 0 to 35 jogs, if you would like to.
We have volunteers who have graduated from our Run4Life courses and are now helping to encourage others to keep on running by coordinating friendly social runs.

There are measured routes that can be walked, jogged or run in Bristol, including:

parkrun and junior parkrun
These are free weekly timed runs organised by volunteers in our parks. They are open to everyone and are safe and easy to take part in. You need to register on the parkrun website before taking part for the first time.
These free 2k runs for children aged between 4 and 14 years take place on Sunday mornings.
