Apply or renew an operator licence

Apply or renew an operator licence

You need an operators licence if you want to operate licensed private hire vehicles driven by licensed private hire drivers.

How to apply

We encourage you to apply online rather than attending the Citizen Service Point (CSP).

Email your application and scans / photographs of the supporting documents to licensing@bristol.gov.uk.

A member of the Licensing Team will then contact you via telephone to make payment.

We still need to see the original Medical and DBS certificate. This may change dependent on any future government advice.

If you do need to come in to the CSP we’re only open from 10am to 12pm, we will not see anyone outside of these times.

You can either drop off the following items at the Citizen Service Point at 100 Temple Street or post the following to Licensing team (Temple Street) Bristol City Council PO Box 3399 Bristol BS1 9NE:

Please note applications take at least 10 working days to be processed.

If you want someone else to discuss your application or licence with us on your behalf, you’ll need to give us written permission.

You can renew your operator licence up to 6 weeks before it expires.

How much it costs

A private hire operator licence may be granted for up to five years and costs:

1 Year: £165
2 Years: £330
3 Years: £495
4 Years: £660
5 Years: £825

You should read the operator conditions (pdf, 312KB) (opens new window) before submitting your application.
